Backcountry Guide Company Fined $150K for Castle Peak Avalanche

On February 17, a group led by Blackbird Mountain Guides was caught in a deadly avalanche at Castle Peak, killing nine people. The group had tried to move toward terrain farther from the avalanche’s runout zone, but an uncrossable creek blocked the route. Guides then avoided an alternate path because it crossed private property, leaving the group exposed to avalanche terrain during a period of high danger.

The guides were fined $151,300 by California’s Cal/OSHA. The largest penalties were for traveling in avalanche terrain during a high-danger warning and failing to properly assess avalanche hazards.
