The Outdoor Business Isn’t Easy Right Now — But Switchback’s Spring Show Offered Reasons for Optimism

June 22, 2026

Community, connection, creativity and innovation were the big themes at Switchback‘s spring edition, which was held last week in New Orleans.

The second annual standalone show, which grew out of The Running Event (TRE), drew 235 brands. More than 300 retailers representing 1,300 doors in 40 states — including REI, Backcountry, Zappos, Playmakers, Fleet Feet and more big names — were on the scene. Fourteen non-profit partners focused on access, advocacy and conservation also were in the spotlight at the event, which will take place again in December as part of TRE.

Organizers were candid about the challenges vendors and retailers have been facing.

“With specialty retail, it’s been a tough go, with tariffs, oil prices and [falling] consumer confidence,” said event director Sean Smith. “A lot of specialty retailers need a little boost, a little optimism. That’s where our education comes in, teaching and talking about those issues of the day,” he said referring to the show’s expanded focus on educational programming. WOMEN’S WEAR DAILY
