Tourist Dies After Leaving Stuck Car in Death Valley

Pierre Michel Formosa, 68, died in Death Valley National Park after his vehicle became stuck near Queen of Sheba Mine Road on Aug. 17. He and a companion walked for help, but Formosa stopped after about 1.3 miles; a California Highway Patrol helicopter later found him deceased as temperatures reached 116°F.

The incident highlights the park’s extreme heat, remoteness, limited cell service, and hazardous backcountry roads. The NPS advises carrying at least one gallon of water per person per day, using a suitable vehicle, carrying emergency communication equipment, and staying with a disabled vehicle whenever possible.
