Indian Climber and Sherpa Injured in Mt. Everest Serac Collapse

May 5, 2026

An Indian mountaineer and a Nepalese Sherpa guide were injured Tuesday morning after a serac collapse sent ice onto the climbing route through the Khumbu Icefall on Mount Everest, Nepal’s Department of Tourism confirmed.

The injured climbers have been identified as Nimish Kumar Singh, 40, of India, and Pembha Tenduk Sherpa, 44, a veteran mountain guide from Nepal. According to officials, the incident occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m. while the team was moving through the Khumbu Icefall as part of their critical acclimatization process.

The group had been making their way toward Camp II after departing from Everest Base Camp earlier in the morning. A serac—a large, unstable block of glacial ice—suddenly collapsed above the route, striking several members of the expedition team with falling debris. Indian.Community
