MODe provides natural fuel for 20-year old top OCR athlete, Veejay Jones

February 17, 2019

COSTA MESA, CA — MODe LLC signs Veejay Jones, youngest ever Spartan Race winner and nationally ranked OCR athlete as brand ambassador to introduce lines of all natural sports nutrition products to the fast-growing world of obstacle course racing.

Back in 2014, at the age of 15, while still running cross country in high-school, Jones started applying his endurance skills to obstacle course racing–then a relatively new discipline in the world of endurance sports. According to Running USA, non-traditional races (Mud Runs, Warrior Dash, Spartan, etc.) had about 4 million finishes in 2013 and according to the two biggest organizations in the sport, Spartan Races and Tough Mudder, they alone claim to have had 7 million racers last year. Although OCR may look like a playground for adults, it is nowhere near that level of playfulness and ease. Running endurance, functional strength, technical skills and mental toughness are only a few of the skills needed to complete any of these races and to endure the pain that comes along with it. “The physical and mental requirements needed to perform well at the elite level, let alone make it through OK as an amateur are huge. That’s where functional nutrition can make a fundamental difference, for both elite and amateur racers,” says Tammo Walter, CEO and Co-Founder of MODe. “How you improve, perform, and recover is drastically impacted by the nutrition you consume when training and competing.” While the athletic traits needed in OCR typically favor more mature athletes, Jones, at only 16 years of age and a plant-based athlete, became the youngest Spartan race winner ever. Adding many OCR podium placements in the following years, he finished the 2018 North American Championship 2nd overall and 1st among USA competitors. As if all of that wasn’t foreshadow enough, he launched into the 2019 OCR season with four (of four 2019 elite races) consecutive 1st places. Jones now has his eyes on performing well if not winning the national OCR, Spartan NA and Spartan World Championships this year.

On a global level, Obstacle Race World states the sport to be present in 44 countries. OCR will be included as a full medal sport in the 2019 Southeast Asia Games and the future looks even brighter as it awaits induction as an official Olympic sport by the International Olympic Committee. “OCR is a growing community and partnering with Veejay made a lot of sense for us. He embodies the new and emerging type of athlete for whom we develop products–the ones that care as much about a healthy diet as they care about the sports they love,” Walter continues.
