Mountain Gazette Issue 204 Pushes the Limits of Outdoor Storytelling

November 12, 2025

From Tibetan prophecies to storm chasers, raccoons and mogul skiers, the 192-page issue celebrates the full absurdity and beauty of the human pursuit

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, CA (November 12, 2025) /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/– Mountain Gazette, the original outdoor magazine, delivers Issue 204 to readers across the world. In its distinctive 11×17” print format, the expanded 192-page edition captures its signature collision of humor, exploration, independent reporting and literary nonfiction.

The cover, captured by Dave Trumpore featuring Brooks Curran, frames a lone skier beneath a canopy of vibrant autumn leaves in Vermont. Inside, find dispatches from the mountains of Tibet to the bike parks and cowboys of small-town America, alongside original art and photography including Jay Blakesberg’s behind-the-scenes look at Chris Benchetler’s Grateful Dead-inspired film, “Mountains of the Moon.”

Within its pages, Mountain Gazette 204 celebrates the strange, the sublime and the snow-covered edges of the human experience. Owen Clarke stumbles into an ancient doomsday prophecy spanning continents and centuries. Adam Howard captures the fleeting vibrance of fall. Ari Schneider goes storm chasing, and Eric Messier flies. Humor and reflection collide in Cy Whiting’s illustrated fable, while Jason Roman captures the otherworldly calm and curious penguins of Antarctica’s Aitcho Islands.

Find Steve Martin and Harry Bliss returning for their fifth comedic collaboration alongside stories by Rembert Browne, Jeremy Jones, Peter Kray, Megan Michelson and more. Featured illustrations from Mike “The Dead Dirtbag” Handzlik, Tatyana Alanis, and full-page photography from artists and storytellers around the world span its pages, including Josh Bishop, Peter Fisher and David R. Stoecklein.

“This issue is like a wide-open map,” said Mountain Gazette editor and owner Mike Rogge. “Our contributors went further than ever before, to new countries, new genres and new ideas about what mountain culture means. Every page carries that spirit of risk and discovery.”

First published in 1966 and revived in 2020 by writer, editor and industry veteran Mike Rogge—known for his work with Powder, The Ski Journal, Vice and more—Mountain Gazette re-established itself as one of the few large-format, ad-light print titles capturing the majesty and madness of modern adventure.

Its revival has been covered by The New York Times, New York Magazine, Fast Company, and more. Mountain Gazette’s independent resurgence offers a refreshing antidote to the digital era’s endless scroll at a time when many publications are radically changing. Printed domestically on FSC-certified paper, the magazine continues to champion independent media and meaningful storytelling. Mountain Gazette will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2026, marking six decades of independent outdoor journalism.
