All Good Launches #ReefFriendly Sunscreen Pledge Campaign

June 9, 2017

Morro Bay, CA (June 9, 2017) — All Good–makers of organic skincare and sunscreens–has officially launched a #ReefFriendly Sunscreen Pledge Campaign aimed at protecting coral reefs by urging consumers to take action and choose mineral-based sunscreens. The campaign is designed to raise awareness and increase support for the protection and restoration of fragile reef ecosystems. Studies have suggested that coral reefs can adapt to change in ocean temperatures and acidification, however they are unable to endure pollutants caused by chemical sunscreens.

After attending the 2016 International Coral Reef Symposium, a gathering of ocean steward scientists who studied the dangers of chemical sunscreens on marine ecosystems, All Good Founder and CEO, Caroline Duell, was inspired to take action. “Every year millions of people wade into coastal waters to admire coral reefs and the natural wonders of the ocean, while unknowingly shedding tons of toxic, chemical-laden sunscreens into the water,” says Duell. “Making reef friendly sunscreens is a start, but it’s not enough. It’s time we use our resources and take serious action before we lose coral reefs in our lifetime.”

Using the latest scientific studies, All Good has outlined #ReefFriendly sunscreen criteria for pledgers, that focus on four major components:

  1. Avoid chemical ingredients including Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, PABA (Aminobenzoic Acid), Enzacamene, Octisalate, Homosalate and Avobenzone.
  2. Say no to toxic preservatives like Parabens, Pthalates, Triclosan and Microbeads.
  3. Choose non-nano Zinc Oxide formulas.
  4. Ensure your sunscreen brand verifies their ingredients with 3rd party testing.

Taking the #ReefFriendly Pledge is a simple action with an important impact. Many athletes, medical professionals and ocean conservationists have joined campaign efforts including explorer and professional photographer, Chris Burkard; world champion free skier, Alison Gannett; endurance sports athlete, Brent Allen; Hawaiian family medical practitioner, Dr. Carolyn Candido; ocean advocate and pro endurance waterman, Bruckner Chase; climber and master yoga teacher, Olivia Hsu; and professional snowboarder, Kimmy Fasani. Organizations that have committed to take a company-wide pledge include Surfrider Oahu; Surfrider Maui; Down to Earth Hawaii and 1% For the Planet.

“The 1% for the Planet movement is all about taking meaningful, daily action for our planet,” says Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet.  “Pledging to protect coral reefs is such an important step – not only does it build a meaningful constituency for our oceans, but it also helps each pledge-taker to gain courage and confidence as an activist for the planet.”

All pledge participants will receive a free Coconut Sunstick with the purchase of any All Good product online. In return, participants are asked to share their pledge on social networks, support policy efforts that encourage the use of #ReefFriendly sunscreens, and make the personal commitment to use #ReefFriendly sunscreens whenever possible.

“Every pledge makes this movement stronger because that’s one more person taking action to protect coral reefs,” says All Good Founder and CEO, Caroline Duell.
