SINGAPORE / TAMPA, Fla. (1 December 2019) – Over the weekend, the eyes of the running world were on Singapore as the 18th running of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) took over the city state for a world-class running experience. With the completion of the 5K and 10K on Sunday morning, more than 50,000 runners from 133 countries were registered to participate over three days of racing, beginning with the Kids Dash Friday evening and followed by the featured Half Marathon and Marathon on Saturday night.

Together with the all-new flag off time on Saturday evening, the new three-day event format was well received among runners and spectators alike as they enjoyed the Singapore’s cityscapes and night life. Through partnership and collaboration with government authorities, organisers took the annual event into the next era as it progresses towards the goal of joining the illustrious Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM), a series of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world.

Tim Hadzima, Executive Director of the Abbott World Marathon Majors said, “Our team is excited to be back in Singapore. It was a great to see the move to an evening event and the progress that the team continues to make.

“As in previous years, our assessment team will take time to review and debrief around all areas of the event that relate to our criteria. We very much look forward to this continued partnership and the long term candidate race process with the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon.”

With a heightened focus on spectator experience, family, friends, and race supporters enjoyed a line-up of entertainment and activities at the three spectator zones demarcated by Empress Lawn, The Promontory and The Float @ Marina Bay. Throughout race weekend, runners were cheered forwards by an enthusiastic crowd that is estimated to more than 150,000 strong – the largest to date.

Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of Asia for The IRONMAN Group, “This year’s race marks a historical milestone in SCSM’s history. With the evening marathon start time and our strongest elite field together with the dedicated spectator zones, this has been our most ambitious race. We have received good reviews from the Race Expo, and both the athletes and supporters were excited about the new evening format, together with the lineup of programmes and activities at the spectator zones.”

“We have set a clear goal in mind to put forward Singapore in the best light, and it prides me to see it all come together,” said Geoff.
