Icebug Continues to Reduce its Climate Footprint Through Supply Chain Investment
June 25, 2025

GOTHENBURG, Sweden /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Through their solar energy program Swedish grip expert Icebug is helping shoe factories in Vietnam switch to solar power. A recent effort has led to the installation of solar cells on the roof of manufacturing partner, Great Process Trading, and now the factory will be able to reduce its emissions by 750 tons of CO₂e per year, all without investing a cent of their own capital.
Icebug produces shoes at three factories in Vietnam – a country that, despite many hours of sunshine, is completely dominated by fossil energy in the electricity grid. In its pursuit of emission reductions, Icebug decided to help its, and other brands’, factory partners to switch. Now the system is in use, and thus Icebug can further reduce its climate footprint.
The solar panels are delivered to the factories free of charge and all service is included. The only thing the factory owners commit to is to buy the electricity that the panels deliver – which is also cheaper than the electricity they previously bought from the public grid.
“This is one of our most effective initiatives to date to reduce emissions in the supply chain,” says CEO David Ekelund.”Through a fairly simple effort, we’re helping the factory reduce its electricity consumption by 45%. This not only benefits our own company initiatives, but also helps reduce emissions for other brands that manufacture at the same location. It is high time that companies invest in sustainability initiatives that not only sound good but actually make a big difference.”
The Great Process Trading project is not the end for Icebug, as it is now continuing to help more of its suppliers gain access to solar energy. Simultaneously, the lessons learned from these projects are being shared with other companies in the European Outdoor Group, an industry association, to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable outdoor industry.
