Lavaredo Ultra Trail hosts the third stop of the Spartan Trail World Championship in the heart of the Dolomites

June 24, 2021

One of the biggest trail running events in the world is held this weekend after a year hiatus, with over 3000 runners tackling its four distances.

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, ITALY (June 24, 2021)– In a busy weekend for the trail running world, the eyes of the community will be set at the gorgeous mountain village of Cortina D’Ampezzo in the heart of the Dolomites. Besides the culture, the mountains of Northeast Italy are the perfect scenery for one of the biggest and pioneer trail and ultra running races in the world as it is Lavaredo Ultra Trail.

This year, with its 120k for the Trail Ultra Category and the 48k for the Trail Run Category, they are one of the Crown Label races of the Spartan Trail World Championship, adding huge prestige to the roster of races in the Spartan Trail vision for the sport. Additionally, outside our Championship, an 80k race together with a shorter 20k race are available to create one of the largest events in Europe.

Over 3000 runners will gather to navigate the stunning trails around Cortina, with the incredible Tre Cime di Lavaredo being the biggest landmark on the UNESCO World Heritage site as are the Dolomites. A great pack of elites will be battling for the big prize purse of U$D 25.000 split in both categories.

Starting on the Trail Ultra side, the headliner is French ultrarunning star Xavier Thevenard, who will certainly lead the pack at the 120k. He won’t have an easy competition, having mountain running legend Marco de Gasperi and Andreas Reiterer from Italy on his back. Hannes Namberger from Germany, Catalunya’s Andreu Simon (winner of the Trail Run category of Transgrancanaria in past February), Greece’s Fotis Zisimopoulos, or France’s Germain Grangier are also some of the candidates for the win. On the women’s side, the crusher of the 2019 edition Kathrin Gotz from Switzerland is back to retain her title. She will have contenders to take it though, with Transgrancanaria’s winner Azara Garcia from Spain, Camille Bruyas from France, USA’s Katie Schide, or Sweden-strong Mimmi Kotka.

The 48k are shorter but not certainly faster, being one of the toughest trail run category races on the 2021 Spartan Trail World Championship. Portugal’s Andre Rodrigues (top 10 at Transgrancanaria’s Marathon), Dimitrios Seletis from Greece, Andre Jonsson from Sweden or Norway’s Jo Forseth Indgaard are some of the strongest guys aiming for the win. On the women’s side, Ida Nilsson (Sweden) is back to racing after an injury hiatus, and it’s exciting to see one of the strongest runners of our sport on the trails again. She’ll be competing with Italy’s legend Elisa Desco, Portugal’s Ines Marques and Katarzyna Wilk from Poland.

The race will be streamed live from Friday, June 25th at 11 PM (CEST) here and you’ll be able to watch the race from wherever you are in the world. Also, race tracking is available here to follow your favorite runners on any of the distances.
