Record Breaks at 2019 Leadville Stage Race

John Gaston and Nina Laughlin give it their all; claim victories

LEADVILLE, Colo. — More than 300 mountain bike enthusiasts took to the Colorado Rockies for the three-day Stages Cycling Leadville Stage Race, owned and produced by Life Time, on July 26-28.

John Gaston of Aspen, Colo. earned first place with an aggregate race time of 6:11:57, setting a new record time of 2:11:08 for the 40-mile trek comprising day one of the race in the process. The previous record of 2:13:03, set in 2018, was held by Payson McElveen. Gaston is a 10x US Ski Mountaineering champion.

Nina Laughlin of Pisgah Forest, N.C. took first in the women’s division, crossing the finish line with an aggregate time of 7:52:27.

Gaston and Laughlin are both scheduled to participate in the upcoming 2019 Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike on Aug. 10.

Created for the most determined athletes, Stages Cycling Leadville Stage Race participants biked an ascending 100 miles of extreme terrain across the rugged Colorado Rockies with a beginning altitude of 10,152 feet and ending at 12,424 feet. The event is part of the Leadville Race Series, which takes place over three months each year, drawing thousands.
