Red Knot Racing Announces Kilimanjaro Trail Run

April 16, 2021

Three high altitude trail races on Africa’s tallest mountain

West Kilimanjaro, Tanzania — Red Knot Racing Company has announced the addition of Kilimanjaro Trail Run to their 2021 lineup of endurance races in Tanzania. The race boasts trail events of ultra, full, and half marathon distances, each highlighting Kilimanjaro’s Shira Plateau. Kilimanjaro Trail Run will take place on September 5, and all-inclusive packages for accommodation and food are available.

Full and ultra marathoners will climb Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho trekking route, through farmland, rain forest, and heather-moorland ecological zones. The full marathon finishes on Shira Plateau, after climbing to 12650 feet, while the 42 mile ultra then descends through West Kili Forest singletrack to the race village finish line. The full marathon will alternate up (odd) and down (even) years. Both events boast more than 9000 feet of climbing in 2021.

The half marathon will take place entirely between 11200 and 12650 feet on Shira Plateau, with 1700 feet of climbing.

“We’re thrilled to offer trail runners the opportunity to run on Africa’s tallest mountain,” said race creator and director Brett Harrison. “And we are honored for the international trail running community to assist us in growing the sport in Tanzania and East Africa.”

Red Knot Racing Company adds Kilimanjaro Trail Run to their already stellar lineup of endurance races in Tanzania. Kilimanjaro 2 Natron (K2N) Stage is a 4-day mountain bike stage race across some of northern Tanzania’s toughest and most scenic landscapes, and Kili Trails Festival is a weekend of trail running, mountain biking, camping, food vendors, and live music on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. The company also has a gravel race in the works for 2022, as well as a 200-mile ultra marathon.

“Having taken part in a number of Kili Trails events and knowing the Red Knot team, as well as the event routes, I would absolutely recommend the Kilimanjaro Trail Run to any adventurous runners looking to create some life-long memories,” offers John Corse, adventure athlete and Serengeti Balloon Safaris CEO. “Sometimes running is about the joy of covering new ground under your own steam. To do this on the shoulder of the highest free-standing mountain in the world, through a combination of ancient forest and giant heather, is something of dreams.”
