No. 1 Ski Resort* Opens 380 Acres of Expert Skiable Terrain

Sun Valley, ID. (Feb. 3, 2021)– After a record-breaking 51” of snowfall over the past seven days, Sun Valley Resort today announces the opening of Sunrise, the much anticipated expansion plan of over 380 acres of skiable terrain, featuring expert level chutes, glades and bowls.

The new terrain is located on the southern flank of Sun Valley’s Bald Mountain, east of the Seattle Ridge day lodge and accessed from the Seattle Ridge high-speed quad chairlift. After descending through the new Sunrise terrain, skiers and riders are whisked swiftly back up the hill by the brand new Broadway high-speed quad chairlift, which rises an impressive 1582 vertical feet in just over a mile. This new Doppelmayr lift opened in December 2020 and replaced Bald Mountain’s oldest operating chairlift, Cold Springs.

The new terrain is a revelation for the renowned resort, known for decades as a leader in snow-making and grooming. By now offering a new ‘backcountry-style’ experience to the quiver, Sun Valley stakes its claim as one of the most innovative and diverse resorts in North America, increasing skiable acreage by 20% with sought-after glades, chutes and bowls for advanced through expert skiers and riders.

“Sun Valley Resort has been working on the Sunrise construction expansion for over three years, and we are elated to open up the fruits of our labor to our community, pass holders and guests,” said Tim Silva, President and General Manager, Sun Valley Resort. “Between the hardworking snow safety and operations teams at the resort and at Doppelmayr, this endeavor was truly a team effort and showcases the ongoing investment by the Holding family, and the dedication to innovation by our entire management team. This expansion is a huge step for the resort, offering an entirely new experience for our highly skilled skiers and riders to enjoy.”

Sun Valley Resort is also introducing a new SnowSports private lesson offering in conjunction with the opening of the Sunrise expansion. The Sunrise Alpine Experience is a four-hour private lesson designed for advanced skiers and riders to experience the new Sunrise terrain under the guidance of one of the industry’s most revered SnowSports programs. This new private lesson enables guests to fully immerse themselves in this exciting new zone and push their limits on challenging terrain while receiving expert tips and instruction from a seasoned Sun Valley SnowSports instructor. Guests can call the Sun Valley SnowSports department at 208-622-2289 or email snowsports@sunvalley.comto book this experience.

Sunrise increases Sun Valley Resort’s skiable area to almost 2,500 acres, providing guests with even more terrain to explore and enjoy the great outdoors, which has proven particularly important in this pandemic year where distancing is of greater need. Sun Valley Resort staff welcome guests and pass holders for a safe and enjoyable 20/21 Winter season, with numerous health and safety measures in place, all of which can be accessed here.
