The Rock Fight Picks the Best Outdoor Towns, Fantasy-Draft Style
May 22, 2025

The latest episode asks: Why make a list when you can draft them instead?
San Diego, CA. (May 22, 2025) /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ — The Rock Fight podcast, known for its unfiltered takes on outdoor culture, is throwing tradition out the window with its latest episode: the 2025 Outdoor Town Draft.
Instead of publishing another subjective list of the “best outdoor towns,” host Colin True is joined by outdoor journalist and author Shawnté Salabert and longtime editor and Open Container podcast host Doug Schnitzspahn to draft their ultimate lineups of U.S. outdoor towns in a fantasy sports-style snake draft.
“This is the episode I’ve wanted to make since I started The Rock Fight,” said True. “Best mountain town lists have been done to death. They used to feel essential, but the gimmicks wore thin. So we’re doing something different. We’re drafting our picks and letting listeners decide who nailed it.”
In this episode, True, Salabert, and Schnitzspahn share sharp insights, surprising and totally debatable picks, plenty of hot takes, and a whole lot of friendly competition and love for life outside. Each guest makes eight mountain town picks, selecting from the following U.S. regions:
- Northwest (including Alaska)
- Southwest (including Hawaii)
- Mountain Region
- Upper Midwest
- South Central (Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas)
- Southeast
- Northeast/Mid-Atlantic
- Wild Card (any town in the U.S.)
Towns of all sizes are eligible, from big cities to backcountry hamlets, and must offer notable access within about two hours and have access to to at least two or three of the following outdoor activities: snow sports, trail running or hiking, mountain biking or gravel riding, paddling, climbing, fly fishing, peak bagging, or paragliding. With each pick, the drafters explain what makes their town choice special, sharing personal insight, local lore, and a few spicy takes.
Listeners are invited to cast their vote for the guest who built the strongest lineup of outdoor towns for 2025 at www.rockfight.co.
