Fenik Announces Breakthrough Camping Refrigeration System

September 12, 2018

Innovative cooler means your food never goes to waste no matter where you are

(BOSTON) – Invented by Jeremy-Fryer Biggs, Spencer Taylor and Quang Truong, the Fenik Yuma 60L Cooler  introduces an exciting new way to actively cool food in the wilderness without the use of electricity. While most refrigerators need electrical components such as fans, air compressors and solar panels to work, the Yuma 60L has no wires or moving parts and can cool down food using only water.

This technology, is a great solution for campers looking to keep food fresh in nature, also has the potential to transform the lives of 1.2 billion people in the world living without access to electricity. Fenik, originally known as Evaptainers, started out as a student project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The purpose of the project was to develop a low-cost method of preserving fruits and vegetables for families that lack access to refrigeration. Their research culminated in the invention of the Fenik Yuma 60L Cooler, which achieves refrigeration through the use of a novel material, PhaseTek™ which mimics the way animals naturally cool themselves.

After 4 years of R&D, field trials with USAID and product testing in Morocco, the Fenik Yuma 60L is finally available to order and enjoy, whether out camping with friends or as a preparedness measure for natural disasters. The company’s unique business model aims to leverage profits from sales in developed nations to reduce the price of the Yuma 60L in emerging markets. This concept allows the Fenik team to reach many more people than with a traditional donation model.

Fenik CEO Quang Truong said, “Ice-chests and coolers only work as long as the ice lasts, and refrigerators are dependent on electricity. The Fenik Yuma 60L is much easier to transport to remote locations, and doesn’t need power or propane to run, allowing you to be completely self-reliant in nature. Simply put, the Yuma 60L can go where conventional refrigerators can’t.”
