Open Sky Wilderness Therapy and Colorado Recovery Partner to Bring Digital Media Overuse and Treatment Training to Boulder

November 12, 2019

Durango, Colo. (November 12, 2019) –Open Sky, a wilderness therapy program nestled in the mountains of southwest Colorado and the canyonlands of southeast Utah, is excited to partner with Colorado Recovery to provide a free training session on digital media overuse and treatment, in Boulder, Colorado later this month. Hosted by Tracy Markle, MA, LPC, Founder & Co-Director of the Digital Media Treatment and Education Center, this free event will take place on Tuesday, November 19 at the Boulder Public Library.

Digital media overuse is a pressing issue in today’s society. Unaddressed, tech addiction and overuse can lead to physical and mental health issues and contribute to an increasingly distracted society where individuals are existing as a hologram of their true selves. The training will focus on different types of digital media overuse and addiction, along with assessment and the successful treatment approaches available.

“It is so important as professionals in the field, that we stay up-to-date on the latest research around developing brains and the impact of exposure to digital media on youth at an early age. It’s essential that we stay in tune with emerging research, ever-evolving client profiles, and innovative treatment modalities for the work we do at Open Sky Wilderness Therapy,” said Sebastiaan Zuidweg, MA, LPC, Open Sky Clinical Director & Therapist.

Markle has worked in a variety of clinical, academic and therapeutic settings providing services to teens, adults, and families since 1992. She specializes in the treatment and recovery from digital media overuse and addictions, substance abuse, mental illness, social isolation, improved relationships, successful life transitions, and academic and employment success

“We are pleased to be partnering with Open Sky and Colorado Recovery, as we have a united goal of bringing awareness to digital media overuse and its impact on mental health and healthy development. As a team of programs, we know the time is now for the mental health and recovery fields to begin recognizing the harm caused by the excessive use of digital devices and digital media applications,” said Markle. “We are hopeful that those who attend this training will come away with a desire to join us in the emerging field of treating digital media overuse.”

At the end of the training, participants will be able to identify the 5 types of digital media overuse (DMO) and addiction, as well as learn more about current research findings and relevant statistics as it relates to media overuse. Finally, participants will learn about the assessment, treatment and family involvement necessary in treating digital media overuse and addiction.

This event is open to the public and will take place at the Boulder Public Library in the Boulder Creek Room on November 19th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The deadline to RSVP is November 15.
