Peak Design Becomes Latest Ambassador for Protecting Blue Whales, Blue Skies Program

August 2, 2022

The partnership will amplify awareness for responsible shipping practices off California Coast

San Francisco, CA (August 2, 2022) /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Peak Design, the worldwide leader in crowdfunding and everyday carry solutions, is the newest brand ambassador for Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies, a California-based program that seeks to protect marine life and improve air quality via voluntary speed reductions for the shipping industry. Dependent on California’s waterways both for the transport of goods and for its remarkable beauty, Peak Design is proud to support a science-based initiative that protects key marine species, improves air quality, and results in a more sustainable way for Peak Design to ship its products.

Launched in 2014, Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies (BWBS) is a voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) Program that creates seasonal and predictable slow speed zones along the California coast. Via its voluntary framework, the program has helped the world’s largest container ships and auto carriers reduce the risk of lethal ship strikes on endangered whales by 50%, reduce underwater noise by 5db per transit, and eliminate 2,000 tons of harmful NOx emissions.

In efforts to strengthen the program’s cooperation, the partnership launched the Brand Ambassador initiative in 2022. The goal of this initiative is to help companies who ship their goods on BWBS-participating vessels advocate for more sustainable shipping within their supply chain. Brands such as Peak Design play a critical role in vessel-speed reduction programs by communicating to ship operators the importance of sustainable shipping practices.

“By becoming a Brand Ambassador, Peak Design understands how companies up and down the supply chain have a critical role to play in protecting whales and lowering greenhouse gasses,” said Robert Mazurek, Executive Director of the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation. “Using shipping companies that participate in Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies, Peak Design signals a commitment to protecting our oceans.”

“At Peak Design, we continually seek ways to become a more sustainable business,” commented Peak Design Sustainability Director, Annie Nyborg. “Protect Blue Whales & Blue Skies gives us a platform to demand more sustainable transportation practices from our freight carriers. We encourage other brands to join as ambassadors to strengthen our collective voice in protecting our air and coastal waters.”

About Peak Design

Since 2010, Peak Design has been building innovative carry solutions with a simple overarching design directive: make the best things. The idea for our first product was born on a motorcycle trip through Southeast Asia and has since expanded to include a cross-functional ecosystem of bags, pouches, slings, straps, and clips. We’ve won applause along the way, but we’re most proud of the fact that we’re 100% crowdfunded and 100% employee-owned. We’ve raised $34.4 Million through 10 Kickstarter campaigns to become the world’s most successfully crowdfunded company. This allows Peak Design to stay investor- free and focused on the things that matter most: designing great products, fostering happy employees, and taking care of our customers and the natural environment.
