Peak Design Forces Customers To Shop Used Before Buying New

April 22, 2022

The company will direct all new gear purchases to its used gear Marketplace for one day

San Francisco, CA (April 22, 2022)/OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Peak Design, the worldwide leader in crowdfunding and everyday carry solutions, will direct all website shoppers to its peer-to-peer Marketplace this Earth Day. Launched in 2021, the Peak Design Marketplace connects buyers and sellers to breathe new life into preowned Peak Design gear. With today’s consumers conditioned to only purchase new gear, Peak Design is redirecting customers to its Marketplace in hopes they will more deeply consider the benefits of buying used.

Manufacturing brand-new products, especially hardgoods like backpacks and tripods, requires significant energy consumption, from raw-material extraction to shipping. Even with industry-leading manufacturing best-practices–100% Climate Neutral Certified operations, and the use of recycled and Bluesign materials in production–Peak Design recognizes the environmental footprint it causes by making and selling new gear. But this Earth Day, sustainability benefits are not the exclusive focus of Peak Design’s message to its customers.

“It’s time to make buying and owning used things cool,” explained Peak Design Sustainability Director, Annie Nyborg. “People understand that buying used is cheaper and better for the environment. But they don’t often think about the fact that great gear ages beautifully. It breaks in, develops patina, gets comfier. It also resists fads. Great design gets better with age.”

There are many platforms dedicated to used gear transactions. However, not all platforms, whether brand-owned or general gear exchanges, are created equal. Used gear platforms often utilize intermediaries to collect, organize and reship post-consumer goods and apparel, creating waste in the used-gear supply chain. By fostering a peer-to-peer connection between buyers and sellers via the Peak Design Marketplace, Peak Design removes the middleman from the exchange, thus eliminating wasteful repackaging and shipping.

The Peak Design Marketplace is powered by Recurate (recurate.com) and was launched a year ago. It has since facilitated thousands of peer-to-peer sales in the US and Canada. The Peak Design website already encourages used product sales by alerting customers on product pages when there are pre-owned items available. This Earth Day (beginning at 12am PT April 22nd) Peak Design will black-out their website to all shoppers, urging them to shop the Marketplace instead.

About Peak Design

Since 2010, Peak Design has been building innovative carry solutions with a simple overarching design directive: make the best things. The idea for our first product was born on a motorcycle trip through Southeast Asia and has since expanded to include a cross-functional ecosystem of bags, pouches, slings, straps, and clips. We’ve won applause along the way, but we’re most proud of the fact that we’re 100% crowdfunded and 100% employee-owned. We’ve raised $34.4 Million through 10 Kickstarter campaigns to become the world’s most successfully crowdfunded company. This allows Peak Design to stay investor- free and focused on the things that matter most: designing great products, fostering happy employees, and taking care of our customers and the natural environment.
