Print Ain’t Dead: Mountain Gazette To Celebrate 60 Years with New Anthology Book

September 22, 2025

New Hardcover Book To Include Nearly 60 Stories From Archived Issues From Hunter S. Thompson To Royal Robbins

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, CA /OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Mountain Gazette, the original outdoor magazine, announces “Print Ain’t Dead: A Mountain Gazette Anthology,” a 300-plus page hardcover book marking the publication’s 60th anniversary since its founding, arriving January 2026.

For the first time, Mountain Gazette is opening its archive to bring six decades of outdoor storytelling into one landmark volume. Nearly 60 stories spanning every era of the magazine are collected here, with works by past and present contributors including Edward Abbey, Hunter S. Thompson, George Sibley, Royal Robbins, Henrik Harlaut, Barry Corbet, Jeremy Jones, Katie Lee, Sadie Stein, Ingrid Backstrom, and many many more. Together, nearly 60 contributors trace the magazine’s 60-year legacy, reflecting the evolving spirit of the mountains.

“Over the last five years, our readers have continually asked to look inside our vault. For the first time, we’re bringing those stories to life in an anthology,” said Mike Rogge, editor of Mountain Gazette. “‘Print Ain’t Dead: A Mountain Gazette Anthology’ combines the efforts of the title under Mike Moore, John Fayhee and myself into one comprehensive book.”

The anthology includes an introduction by Rogge, a foreword by former editor M. John Fayhee, an exclusive Jaded Local column from Hans Ludwig, and an original cartoon collaboration by Harry Bliss and Steve Martin. “Print Ain’t Dead” spans three iterations of Mountain Gazette, from classics like Royal Robbins’ “A Dream of White Horses” and Hunter S. Thompson’s “Politics and the F-Word,” to modern reflections by Ari Schneider, Megan Michelson, Henrik Harlaut and Ted Kerasote.

Front and back covers feature photography of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park by Mountain Gazette Senior Photographer Josh Bishop. Each book is printed domestically at Walsworth in Marceline, Missouri, on FSC-certified paper.

Founded in 1966 by Mike Moore as Skiers’ Gazette in Aspen, Colorado, the publication relaunched years later as Mountain Gazette to reflect a broader mountain culture. Relaunched in 2025 by Mike Rogge, today’s anthology draws from the depths of that history, uniting past and present voices in one volume.

Pre-orders are open now at mountaingazette.com, with shipping in January 2026. A limited anthology bundle—featuring the book, a hoodie and a mug—is also available.

“It’s been an honor to shepherd Mountain Gazette to this 60th anniversary milestone,” said Rogge. “We don’t get here without the love and backing of readers, the only investors we’ve ever had or will ever have.”
