Rocky Talkie Distributes $36K to 2023 Search and Rescue Award Winners

August 29, 2023

Chosen for their inspiring rescues, the winners exemplified their commitment to backcountry users

DENVER, CO (August 2023)/OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Rocky Talkie, in partnership with the American Alpine Club, is proud to announce the winners of the 2023 Search and Rescue Awards. To be considered for the award, Search and Rescue teams from across the country submitted their most inspiring rescue mission from the last twelve months. A panel of judges chose three winners and the public voted to recognize one of those missions as the most inspirational rescue of the year. 2023 winners include Inyo County Search and Rescue, Portland Mountain Rescue with the Hood River Crag Rats, and overall winner, Chelan Mountain Rescue.

Outdoor enthusiasts depend every day on search and rescue teams to provide assistance when adventures go awry. To shed light on the heroic efforts of these highly skilled teams, Rocky Talkie and the American Alpine Club formed the Search and Rescue Awards.

“Most search and rescue teams in the United States are composed of volunteers – men and women that willingly put themselves in harm’s way to bring people safely home when mishaps occur in the backcountry,” commented Bryce Jones, CEO and co-founder of Rocky Talkie. “We hope The Search and Rescue Awards generates greater awareness of the vital work of these groups while serving as a token of appreciation from Rocky Talkie and our customers,” Jones continued.

To raise award money, Rocky Talkie pledges $2 from each sale of the brand’s popular 2-watt Mountain Radio. Funds are collected throughout the year, pooled and then distributed equally amongst the top three rescue team submissions. This year, Rocky Talkie was proud to generate $36K for the awards. Winners also receive a video documenting their inspiring rescue produced by award winning outdoor filmmaker, John Glassberg.

Washington State’s Chelan Mountain Rescue received the most votes for its coordinated rescue of an injured climber in the Enchantments Wilderness Area. Other recipients of the Search and Rescue Awards included Inyo County Search and Rescue and Portland Mountain Rescue with the Hood River Crag Rats.

The submission period for the 2024 Search and Rescue Awards will open in early October and all search and rescue organizations are encouraged to apply.
