Irish paddler David Horkan embarks on 950-mile trip
ARCATA, California – David Horkan, one of Ireland’s top kayakers, is spending the late summer of 2017 on a 950-mile solo kayak expedition around his homeland and will be wearing Kokatat gear as he navigates through unpredictable weather, big ocean swells and daunting headlands.
Horkan will undertake the expedition, dubbed “´Eire 360”, without support, and will rely on his Kokatat GORE-TEX® Meridian dry suit and Kokatat’s Orbit Tour PFD for comfort and security. Fewer than 25 people have completed solo circumnavigations of Ireland. Horkan, a professional kayak instructor and guide, has his sights set on the current circumnavigation record of 23 days (set by Mick O’Meara in 2015). He is also using the expedition as a way to raise awareness and funds for CMRF Crumlin that supports research and the Crumlin Children’s Hospital.
The clockwise paddle around the Emerald Isle begins August 17 and Horkan expects to kayak between 10-15 miles each day. “I do hope to meet some friends and kayaker’s onshore along the way and maybe even get a warm shower,” he said.

About Kokatat Inc.
Kokatat has been manufacturing paddling gear in Arcata, California for more than 45 years. At a time when many technical apparel brands were moving manufacturing offshore, Kokatat continued to invest in infrastructure in the United States. Kokatat founder Steve O’Meara was committed to the development of the finest and driest paddling apparel in the world and recognized the need to control and continually evolve the development of our dry wear. In the early days, Kokatat worked closely with W.L. Gore & Associates, makers of GORE-TEX®, to refine the sewing and sealing techniques required for full immersion suits and tops. Today, our hands-on approach to manufacturing continues to set the standard in paddling apparel. Into the water with Kokatat! Learn more at www.kokatat.com.
