The B Corp Asks Others to Take the Pledge to Quit Single Use Plastic

PHILADELPHIA, June 7, 2019 — Today, United By Blue, the outdoor brand focused on ocean conservation that has removed over 1.7 million pounds of trash from the world’s oceans and waterways, is evolving its mission of tackling ocean plastic by taking a pledge — to remove the company’s use of single-use plastic from their waste stream within one year. By World Oceans Day 2020, United By Blue will eliminate the most prevalent plastics in their waste stream including plastic poly bags, plastic swift tags, plastic bubble wrap sleeves, plastic trim bags and more.

Also, tomorrow, on June 8, World Oceans Day, United By Blue is asking others to join them in eliminating single use plastic by taking the pledge to Quit Single Use Plastic (#QuitSingleUse) for 24 hours. The goal is to encourage and inspire individuals to reevaluate their own dependence on plastic by pledging. For each person who takes the pledge through United By Blue’s social media campaign (1 “like” to the pledge post = 1 pledge), United By Blue will add one pound of trash to the 2020 trash removal goal, with a goal of reaching 50,000 pledges.

“Let’s face it, as a society, we are addicted to plastic and that has got to change and that starts today,” says Mike Cangi, United By Blue’s Co-Founder and Brand Director. “Through 10 years of waterway cleanups, we’ve become intimately aware of the damage caused by single use plastics—we’ve picked them up by the thousands from garbage-strewn beaches and riverbanks. We’ve worked tirelessly to make products that are as kind to the earth as possible, always opting for natural, organic, and recycled fabrics. We’ve opened LEED Platinum retail stores built with reclaimed materials. Yet, despite our efforts to build the most responsible brand of our generation, our operations depend on single-use plastic and we know we can do better. We decided to make a pledge for change and we hope others will join us.”

UNITED BY BLUE PLEDGE

Over the past year, United By Blue has completed a full audit of their supply chain, production, and operations to measure their plastic usage. The results made the company realize they needed to evolve the mission to address ocean pollution further upstream, to try and stop the problem at its source. GET INVOLVED: THE PUBLIC PLEDGE – Launches June 8

The #QuitSingleUse pledge asks the world to confront addiction to plastic by going one day without it. United By Blue created this pledge to bring people together and provide them with the catalyst, community, and resources needed to start breaking humanity’s most harmful habit. Quitting plastic is difficult; it’s certainly more convenient to grab a plastic bottle or bag than to plan ahead and avoid those things. But above all else, United By Blue believes in the strength of community, and the ability to make the tough but necessary choice when everyone is in this together.
