Winter Riding Authority PEARL iZUMi Debuts New Fall 2019 Road Collection

September 19, 2019

Cold, Rain, Sweat or Tears: the new road collection promises to keep you in the saddle all-year long

LOUISVILLE, Colo., (September, 19  2019) — Addressing the changing needs of riders in the road performance category,  PEARL iZUMi, the world’s leader in cycling apparel and footwear, introduces an entirely new line of cold weather road pieces featuring Recycled Repreve® XS Polyester, Bioviz® reflective elements and PI Dry® water shedding technology.

“Our new fall collection addresses the changing reality of off-season riding around the world,” said Randy Johnston, Road Product Manager for PEARL iZUMi. “We’re seeing more wet weather and longer shoulder seasons, and riders are looking for pieces that can be easily layered in different combinations to best adapt to the conditions. We started from the body and worked our way out, with a new collection of Merino wool baselayers, Thermal Jerseys, and a game-changing AmFIB outer layer.”

With cold and wet days looming ahead, the PRO AmFIB Shell ($225) gives a knockout performance in water resistance, fit and endurance, due to ground-breaking PI Dry® water shedding technology. This lightweight shell offers tremendous flexibility and can be worn directly over a baselayer in cool conditions or layered with an additional Thermal Jersey for deep winter. With a PRO 3-layer, 4-way stretch AmFIB® Softshell fabric that is windproof, water-resistant and 50% more breathable than typical membranes, riders can excel in the wet and benefit from enough ventilation to comfortably make hard efforts. Two back pockets plus a zippered center pocket balance ease of access and all-weather security, while the two-way water resistant Vislon® Aquaguard zipper is easy to use with gloves for quick ventilation. This shell goes the extra mile to get through the shoulder seasons in comfort.

The PRO Merino Thermal Jersey ($195) is a 40/60 blend of responsibly sourced Merino wool and nylon, designed to excel in cool damp conditions. “Recent testing at the ACE climatic wind tunnel in Oshawa, Canada, has shown that this jersey keeps riders warmer on the bike and reduces post-ride chill when compared to similar weight synthetic-only pieces, especially when used in combination with the new Merino Baselayers.” said PEARL iZUMi Physiologist Rob Pickels.  In addition to the performance benefits, the piece also looks great on-body, benefitting from the drape of Merino wool. Three back pockets provide ample space to stash valuables, and a full length Vislon® zipper adds ventilation and ease of use.  BioViz® reflective elements improve  low-light visibility for shoulder season riding.

The PRO Thermal Jersey ($165) is a lightweight jersey that offers surprising warmth, perfect as a layering piece or an outerlayer.  PRO Thermal+ fabric adds warmth without bulk, and the bonded neck, hand cuffs and front hem lay flat against the skin to fit smoothly beneath a shell. While on the road, the silicone print on hem holds the jersey in position, while six layered pockets provide organized storage for a long day of riding.

PEARL iZUMi is introducing two new Merino wool baselayers with the fall collection, featuring material innovations that improve performance and utilize 100% sustainable materials. Both pieces use a new Transfer Merino fabric with plaited construction that concentrates technical synthetic fibers next to skin and fine Merino wool on the outside, in two distinct layers. Compared to most blends that distribute each fiber equally throughout, this construction maximises the positive attributes of both fibers and yields a fabric that keeps riders dryer, warmer, and reduces post-ride chill. In addition to superior cool weather performance the fabric is 100% sustainable, using Repreve® XS Polyester technical fibers made from recycled plastic water bottles and responsibly sourced Merino wool.

For frigid days, the Merino Thermal Longsleeve Base ($110) is PEARL iZUMi’s heaviest base layer, featuring 250g/m2 Transfer Merino wool fabric with superior moisture transfer performance. Repreve® XS Polyester technical fibers made from recycled plastic water bottles are concentrated close to the body to take away sweat, while its 18.5-micron responsibly sourced Merino wool outer surface adds warmth and temperature regulation. This base layer is ideal underneath an AmFIB jacket, and is a crucial staple for winter months.

Rounding out base layers is the Merino Base ($80) and Merino Longsleeve Base ($90). This versatile layer is made from a lighter weight Transfer Merino fabric and excels in cool damp conditions, where riders need to maintain a consistent microclimate to ward off chill.
