AAC Responds to Trump’s Remarks About “Climbers”

March 15, 2018

Thursday, March 15 (GOLDEN, CO) — During a visit to San Diego on Tuesday, President Trump compared immigrants to “professional mountain climbers” in referring to his proposed border wall with Mexico. The President said the wall needed to be a tough physical obstacle, as those seeking to enter the U.S. illegally are “incredible climbers.”

“Getting over the top is easy. These are like professional mountain climbers, they’re incredible climbers. They can’t climb some of these walls,” Trump told reporters during a tour of border wall prototypes.

American Alpine Club CEO, Phil Powers, responded by saying:

“We’d be happy to consult with anyone about climbing walls. As every member of the American Alpine Club knows, walls inspire us: they present challenges we seek to overcome. Walls don’t repel. They attract people who dream big.”

The American Alpine Club (AAC) is the nation’s largest and oldest climbing organization with over 20,000 members. The AAC was founded in 1902 and was early-on led by American conservationists such as John Muir. More about the American Alpine Club at https://americanalpineclub.org/
