Junipers Brings Functional, Quick-Dry Bikini to Life for Adventurous Women

July 7, 2020

Designed to be dry enough to put on a shirt in just 15 minutes, Junipers were inspired by men’s quick-dry shorts and created for women to adventure without soggy swimwear

CARNELIAN BAY, Calif. (July 7, 2020) – Junipers, the first do-it-all hybrid bikini made of quick-drying, recycled, eco-friendly fabric, has launched a Kickstarter with the goal of raising funds to manufacture its first production run. Designed for adventurous women who want a technical swimsuit with a classic silhouette that stays put when recreating, Junipers dry quickly and can work alone as shorts and a lightweight sports bra. Created to dry five times faster than swimsuits by other leading outdoor brands, Junipers are dry enough to be able to put on a shirt within 15 minutes. Designed by Emily McAllister in North Lake Tahoe, California, the inspiration for Junipers was based on her own desire to explore wherever and whenever, without being required to give a second thought about what she was wearing.

Made from RecoTex™, an eco-friendly, quick-drying recycled fabric consisting of a 91% post-consumer water bottle polyester, 9% spandex blend with a durable water repellent finish and a thin quick-dry bra liner, Junipers are sustainably sourced and ethically manufactured at a woman-owned American factory in Minnesota. Junipers have been tested on adventures that include backpacking trips along the Pacific Crest Trail, a New Year’s Day polar bear plunge in Lake Tahoe, mountain biking, paddleboarding, surfing, canoeing, fishing and watching sunsets on the beach.

“I created Junipers because I wanted to be able to go on a big hike, jump in the lake, and have a celebratory beer on the dock after — all without having the stop and awkwardly change behind a pine tree,” said Emily McAllister, Junipers founder. “There are plenty of men’s quick-dry shorts for hiking, swimming and hanging out around town, but for some reason, nothing like that has existed for women. I want to change that.”

Over the past two years, McAllister has been prototyping and field testing her designs to develop a functional, “go-to” swimsuit for summer adventures. To meet the challenge, she knew Junipers had to feature a top that would not need to be wrung out after swimming, and bottoms that can be worn as casual shorts with a fully gusseted inseam for complete coverage. In addition to the right fabric, technical features like a sewn-in foam liner inspired by ballet apparel that absorbs very little water and dries quickly, and full coverage flexible shorts with an adjustable waistband influenced by mountain bike short designs were used. Other details like an adjustable band with lay-flat closure (no bulky string bikini ties here!), slim pocket with key loop for essentials, and a snap closure back pocket are also included.

A Kickstarter campaign launches today to raise funds to manufacture and ship Junipers’ initial run of swimsuits this summer. The success of the campaign will allow for the introduction of vibrant colors and a broader range of inclusive sizing for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Discounts will be extended to those who purchase Junipers through the funding campaign, with the top individually priced at $72, and two-piece sets sold for $139. Early adopters benefit, too. The first 100 two-piece sets will be sold for $119 each (tops and bottom sizes can be mixed).
