Oru Embraces the Fold and Launches Modular, Portable Origami Furniture

May 11, 2023

Oru Camp will elevate the aesthetics and functionality of campsites and backyard patios

Oakland, CA (May 11th, 2023)/OUTDOOR SPORTSWIRE/ – Oru Kayak, the original origami kayak brand, has announced a milestone in origami design and innovation: Oru Camp. Featuring an origami-style Adirondack chair, an adjustable height table with storage, and a combination step stool and storage cube, Oru Camp is further proof that Oru’s original origami design technology can improve the aesthetics and functionality of everyday, outdoor products.

On its surface, Oru Camp is an eye-catching suite of products whose lines make the furniture stand out against traditional portable camp and patio furniture designs. However, the inherent properties of Oru’s origami technology elevates the utility, durability and convenience of the three products within Oru Camp. Portable furniture typically depends on point-loads and mechanical hinges to provide structural integrity. These are common fail points and, once compromised, lead to furniture ending up in the trash. In contrast, Oru Camp is built using “living hinges,” a property of origami folds that effectively distribute large amounts of weight and add exceptional durability. Since folds replace rivets and stretched fabric, Oru also eliminates unnecessary weight while providing unique features such as native, built-in storage to each product.

Oru’s versatile SwitchTable (MSRP: $200) beautifully demonstrates these inherent origami advantages. When assembled, the SwitchTable is a 11.25lb, 29.5” full-height prep table that can be instantly transformed with two quick folds into a 15.5” coffee table or a bench for two people. For added convenience, the Hi-Lo’s table surface opens to reveal two hidden storage compartments which can be simultaneously used for dry storage and as a secondary ice chest for keeping food and beverages cold.

“Ten years ago, Oru fundamentally changed people’s access to on-water experiences by applying origami design to create foldable kayaks,” commented Oru Founder & Chief Design Officer, Anton Willis. “Throughout this journey, we’ve been eyeing other product categories that we could transform using our original origami design principles. Oru Camp embodies this unique design ethos and we’re excited to share it with the world,” Willis continued.

As with the SwitchTable, Oru’s Adirondack-style chair, PopLounge (MSRP: $150), and combination step stool and storage cube, FlipCube (MSRP: $75), can be assembled in 30 seconds and lay nearly flat when not in use. Similar to Oru’s “box-to-boat,” kayaks, Oru Camp can be conveniently transported in the trunk of a car and can be stacked in a closet for easy storage. To enhance durability, each product is constructed of Oru’s double-walled, custom-extruded Oruplast polypropylene, which is abrasion resistant and is tested for 20,000 folds.

Oru Camp will launch on May 11, 2023 and will be available for a limited presale on Kickstarter–Oru’s 6th crowdfunding campaign.
